Since I'm not that good of a clicker (8 p/s) and don't prefer hotkeys, I use:
1) Sword (Hotkey)
2) Fns (Hotkeyed)
3) Rod (Buttoned on my mouse)
4) Arrows (Scroll)
5) Food Highest Sat or a Gapple (Scroll)
6) Food (Scroll)
7) Food(Scroll)
8) Food (Scroll)
9) Bow (Hotkey to 1 then scroll down)

Any better hotbar settups, I'm trying to learn how to hotkey

This one is pretty easy for me

Its easy to press 1,2 for rod and sword combos and whenever I'm in melee and I'm low, I just scroll to my gapple and eat it. It also makes it easier to place fire by pressing 1,4,1,4,1,4

If you want to hotkey, I suggest Huahwi's setup. It's easy to get used to, and you can switch weapons quickly if you do hotkey.

1: Sword, pretty basic.
2: FnS. This makes it easy to quick switch, and you can scroll if you're still uncomfortable.
3. Rod. You don't want to overuse the rod, so putting it in a strange spot makes sure you only use it when you're out of hit range.
4. Bow. Since you're not going to need to whip this out fast, 4 will work well.
5-8- Gapple/food.
9-Arrows. Helps when you're on the run.

Although I don't hotkey anymore (I use mouse side buttons), this setup worked really well for a long time.

I personally think there is no "best setup". It is only how used to the setup you are, and how efficient you can use it.

Thanks Huahwi.

Anyway, there really isn't any sort of "best" hotbar set up. It's just whatever works with you and your controls.

Notes: 2 is nothing because I prefer to have my fist out when not in combat so I don't give away my weapon, 6 through 9 is best to worst food with all the other food above, the arrow parts are conveniently placed for crafting, the ingots are there for swords and food, and the apples and carrots are under the gold for golden apples and carrots, and I don't keep raw chicken. :)

Slot 1: Sword
Slot 2: Fishing rod
Slot 3: FNS
Slot 4: Bow
Slot 5: Gapple
Slot 6: Other eat
Slot 7: Other eat
Slot 8: Other eat
Slot 9: Arrows

This is a very convenient layout of things, because you can reach from fishing rods to bow instantly, from the sword to the rods very quickly, from fishing rods to FNS too quickly, because when you have one object and you use it correctly you may need another and he is near. I personally have long used a variety of the layout of things and this is the best.

In reality you can't have the "best" hotbar setup since it is basically based off whatever is easier for a person to play. Additionally, most people choose their setup off of bigger YouTubers in the community.
